Summary of Key Changes from 2025 to 2026 Fanaki Moot Rules

Below are the major substantive changes made from the 2024-2025 to 2025-2026 academic year rules. Teams are responsible for reviewing and understanding the entirety of the Official Rules and should not rely on this document as an exhaustive list of changes or updates.

School Registration Fee Change

  • Registration Fee: The registration fee increased from CDN$500 to CDN$1,000

Substantive Rule Changes or Clarifications

  • Clarification Questions: an inconsistency in the rules was removed to explicitly allow for clarifications questions related to matters other than the Official Problem, such as the interpretation of the rules or procedural issues. (this memorializes past practice)

  • New Source Disclosure Rule: if a team wants to use a source during oral arguments that wasn't in their factum, they must:

  • Email the source to opposing counsel at least 7 days before the oral phase begins

  • Provide a printed copy with relevant sections highlighted to the judging panel

  • Time Allocation Process: Changed from a simple verbal process to a formal written system:

  • Before: Timekeeper would ask teams how to allocate time at the start of each match

  • Now: Teams must complete forms provided at check-in and deliver them to timekeepers before each match begins

Administrative Updates

  • Registration: teams cannot change any part of their Updated Registration once Appellant factums have been submitted

  • Final Round: judges will "determine a winning Team of the Final Round" based on oral argument only (this memorializes past practice)
