Welcome to the Adam F. Fanaki Competition Law Moot

The Adam F. Fanaki Competition Law Moot is organized by the Competition Bureau, the Competition Tribunal and the Canadian Bar Association. This annual event gives Canadian law students the chance to tackle timely, complex civil or criminal issues in a growing field of law that strives to balance private economic incentives with the public interest. Participants have the opportunity to obtain feedback from top law enforcers, judges and specialist practitioners in an intimate setting. This event is also a valuable networking opportunity for anyone interested by a career in law.

The 2024 Fanaki Moot will be held on March 22nd & March 23rd in Toronto.

Moot renamed in honour of the late Adam F. Fanaki

Formerly the Canadian Competition Law Moot, the annual event was renamed in 2020 to honour a brilliant and inspirational lawyer who was a pillar of the competition law community. Adam F. Fanaki passed away on February 15, 2020, after a long battle with brain cancer. Adam was a highly respected leader in the international antitrust community who practiced at leading Canadian law firms and acted as Senior Deputy Commissioner of the Mergers Branch at the Competition Bureau. While at the Bureau, he played a key role in the design and implementation of major reforms to the Competition Act.

Adam embodied the values of kindness, respect, professionalism and integrity to which we all strive. Adam’s core values, in addition to his strengths as a litigator, mentor and advocate for competition, make him the ideal role model for the students who will compete in the moot every year. Naming the event in Adam’s honour will also serve as a constant reminder that the values he so aptly demonstrated throughout his life are incredibly important in the adversarial context that often defines the practice of law.
